Hyaluronic acid is a
glycosaminoglycan (an important component of connective tissue), occurring naturally
throughout the human body. In the skin, hyaluronic acid is present within the
deeper layers (the dermis) and it helps to retain moisture — up to 1,000 times
its weight in water. And due to its ‘water-retaining and holding’ attribute, injecting it or topically applying this molecule can help to keep skin smooth and plump.
Several hyaluronic acid (HA) dermal fillers are now commercially available for mid- to deep dermal
implantation for correction of moderate to severe facial wrinkles. When used
topically, I must highlight that HA cannot penetrate through the skin, so what it
does locally, it hydrates the fine lines and intensely moisturizes the skin. This can also give the skin a more youthful and radiant appearance. However, it does not replace the HA lost in your body.
Fillerina Volume Lips by
Labo Suisse is a serum lip filler. It is developed as a serum to be applied using
the roll-on dispenser several times a day (up to four to five times). This is helpful
for those who want to increase, restore moisture and/or define the structure of
their lips. Available in two variants with different dosage of HA: Dosage I and Dosage II.
The formulation contains 6 hyaluronic acid molecules, with different molecular weights. The low molecular weight HA penetrates the skin for deep hydration, while the higher
molecular weight form of the acid creates an invisible barrier on the skin’s surface.
Packaging and use:
The device
vaguely resembles a pen with a steel ball roller application head. At the base, there is a
plunger that has to be pressed repeatedly to release the dose of HA toward the
applicator tip. The transparent gel is tasteless, odorless and non-sticky. On
application, it absorbs instantly and gives a smooth appearance to your lips.
Does
it work?
I’ve
been receiving innumerable messages in my inbox, asking me if this product
really works as a non-invasive lip augmentation. I’ve been wondering the same
ever since I started using the product. I’ve tried to monitor the visible changes,
if any on my lips. The product should not be compared to a cosmetic intervention since this is only applied topically.
I believe this works if you want a slight increase
in volume and more definition on your lips. Again, the effect is not sudden
and is only visible if you’re persistent with the application. Each pre-filled
pen has enough gel to last you for a month (5 times/day). I have just completed
my third week of using the product. Ideally, as suggested by the Fillerina skin
experts, you have to use it for 3 months to notice the full effect. Unfortunately
the treatment is not very long lasting. Once you’ve stopped using the product,
there is a gradual loss of the volume acquired.
Final
verdict:
Use
this if you’re looking for a slight filling effect, but a more defined lip
contour. Effect is only seen if you’re having thin lips to start with. Each
pre-filled pen costs for AED 289, and the effect lasts for a month after you
stop using it. Knowing this is a topical product, this was expected.. The other
drawback I experienced was the need to use it five times per day.
